Amazing Facts About Photosynthesis

Every living thing in the world needs energy to survive. But where do plants get their energy from? Unlike most living things which produce their energy from the food they eat, plants produce their own energy in a different process which is known as ‘photosynthesis’. Photosynthesis can be defined as a chemical process by which plants produce their energy by converting carbon dioxide into carbohydrates or sugar with the help of sunlight. In this process, light energy gets converted into chemical energy. Some amazing facts about photosynthesis are given in the points mentioned below.

Shape of trees

Trees and plants are mostly triangular in shape. This is because they need more sunlight to complete the process of photosynthesis. Therefore trees and plants have a triangular shape so that they can get the maximum amount of sunlight.

Chlorophyll which is basically a plant cell is the primary pigment of the process of photosynthesis. Chlorophyll energizes electrons using a specific wavelength of sunlight.

Food for animals

Tree and plants provide energy to most animals in the form of food. Through photosynthesis, plants produce food which is not only used by them but also other living things like reptiles, birds, and numerous omnivorous and herbivorous animals.

Importance in ecosystem

Photosynthesis plays a very important role in the ecosystem. The process of photosynthesis produces oxygen and energy which is needed for various ecosystems to survive.

Old trees

The process of photosynthesis occurs in old plants and trees and does not only occur in new ones. Trees can live as long as they can produce food. Due to this reason, trees can live more than 1000 years.

Photosynthesis in animals

Scientists have found that a type of sea slug can produce its own food through photosynthesis. Sea slugs consume algae, but they do not digest the algae fully which continue to photosynthesize. Thus producing food and providing energy for the slug.
