Places in India that Combine the Best of Beauty and Mystery

There is no shortage of beautiful places in India. No matter which part of the country you visit, you are bound to run into places, people, and things that simply take your breath away, and a lot of those beautiful places also hold mysteries that have captured the imagination of both locals and tourists.

If beauty alone does not quench the explorer’s thirst in you, here are some places you must visit in India for not just their beauty, but also their mysteries.

Dumas Beach, Gujarat

Gujarat’s Dumas Beach is strangely both spectacular and scary. Not too far from Surat, one of Gujarat’s most prominent cities, this black sand beach plays host to thousands of tourists every year, most of whom come to relax by the beach, and indulge in the host of tasty local food available in the vicinity. However, the beach is also notorious for being haunted. Many locals believe that once upon a time, the beach was a burial ground. A lot of people have apparently gone missing in the past as well, so definitely be on your guard when you visit this beach, especially in the evenings.

Roopkund Lake, Uttarakhand

The Roopkund Lake is nestled in the upper reaches of the Himalayas, at an altitude of almost 16,000 ft. Known by its nicknames “Skeleton Lake” and “Mystery Lake”, it takes trekkers 6-7 days to reach the lake, and it is a fascinating sight not just because of its geographical location amidst towering Himalayan peaks. Numerous skeletons can be seen here after the snow melts, and researchers have still not exactly managed to ascertain their origins, but it is believed that they are remnants from the 9th Century.

Bhangarh Fort, Rajasthan

Probably India’s most famous haunted place, the Bhangarh Fort in Rajasthan’s Alwar District is a spectacular sight, both from distance, and up close. Located near the foothills of the Aravalli range, the fort is surrounded by surreal natural beauty. There are many theories as to why the fort is haunted. While some believe that a wizard cursed the fort, others believe that the fort is home to the ghost of Anittavathi, a beautiful woman who refused the love of legendary ruler Tipu Sultan, went into battle with him, and once defeated, committed suicide along with her troops. The fort remains strictly off-limits to tourists after dark.

Other notable places of both beauty and mystery in India include Orissa’s Chandipur Beach, Manipur’s Loktak Lake, and Delhi’s Khooni Nadi (Killer River). is a one-stop search engine to find holiday packages at the best rate.
