Travelling solo can be a really adventurous yet a dangerous ordeal. The media has reported so many horrid cases recently, which have been occurring quite regularly here in India. It is always better to be prepared for any kind of problem you might encounter while travelling solo. Our life is the most precious thing that we have, so our safety should be of utmost importance. As the famous proverb says, “Prevention is better than cure.” We must always try to avoid or prevent misfortunes from happening, which are quite common when you are travelling to a different place.

Travelling alone on a train is quite an intriguing experience. It is a different kind of adventure altogether. You won’t be depended on anybody. You will have to tackle all your problems alone. Also it gives you enough space to delve into yourself and find some peace of mind. You can take some time off your regular routine and get out once in a while. You will also learn a lot when you travel by yourself. But train journeys take a lot of time, so you have to very careful about your safety. Though most of the famous trains in India have pretty good security system, you must always be alert of your surroundings and the people around you.

Given below are some of the safety tips which you can keep in mind the next time you travel alone in a train to keep away any hardships that might come in your way.

  1. Timings– You should be absolutely confident about your train times. The exact time you should board your train and the exact time you need to get off must be known by you. Trains run a little late most of the times so having these small details will not only save your time, also protect you from dangerous attacks that might happen when you travel at night. Knowing the exact timings will help you be better prepared.
  2. Sleeping Pills– You must never take any kind of medications which might put you to a deep sleep when you are travelling on a night train. It might seem like a better choice to take a pill to help you sleep through all that noise or light. But you would absolutely not want to sleep off while someone took off with all your belongings and money. It is of utmost importance that we be alert when travelling solo, mostly on a night train.
  3. Steel Chains and Locks– For an added security of your belongings, you could carry a chain made of steel and a set of manual lock and keys. Many people even sell them in front of the major railway stations. The lower berths of the trains are provided with iron rings to which you can attach your luggage with the help of the chain.
  4. Handbags and Purses– Your handbag or any other bag which carries most of your money, tickets, important documents, etc. must be always kept with you. This is the most important of your belongings. Keep it with you when you sleep or even when you go to use the washroom.
